"Are we leaving soon?" I asked impatiently to mom.

"Hold on a minute", she answered as she was busy folding laundry. "I told you I would finish this before we could leave."

I sense mom is a bit annoyed, so I don't insist. This Saturday afternoon in January, we're supposed to go shopping to buy what we need for our winter vacation. Last year, we couldn't go because mom didn't have much money, but this year, we're going, I'm so happy. I love the snow and all the activities we can do.

We made a list of what we need, and Noa and I have grown quite a bit. So we need to buy new winter sport suits and thermal underwear. As usual, we go to this well-known sports store with affordable prices.

"Alright, I'm done", mom said, "we can go now."

Noa and I didn't need to be told twice. Putting on our shoes, we head towards the stairs and get into the car.

"I feel like you're happy to go shopping", mom says.

"Oh yes, I'm so happy", I say. "It means that the holidays are coming and we'll be able to go skiing."

"And me", says Noa, "can I try snowboarding this year?"

"We'll see", mom says.

The journey is quick and once in the store, it's a bit chaotic. I go one way, Noa another, and mom struggles to discipline us to try on clothes. Maybe an hour passes and we go to the checkout to pay for our purchases. I tried on several ski suits, base layers and tights. Noa did the same but wasn't very happy about having to wear tights during the snowy holidays. "You'll be glad to have them if it's cold," mom told him.

In the car, Noa and I unpack the contents of the bag to check out our purchases. I found a small hand warmer in the store and I have fun activating it. It warms up, it will be really cool when it's cold during our vacation. Suddenly, we hear a "boom" and mom screams before stopping the car completely.

She quickly gets out after opening the door. I realize we're in front of our building. I then hear mom scream again. I quickly unbuckle my seatbelt and get out to see why she screamed. As soon as I reach her, I see mom crouched next to Arnaud, a boy from my class.

"Oh my God," mom screams, "I didn't see you when I backed up with the car. Are you okay?" she asks him.

Arnaud doesn't answer, he seems a bit shocked. His bike is next to him, with a slightly twisted wheel.

"Don't move," mom says to him as she grabs her phone, "I'm calling for help."

"I'm fine," Arnaud finally says. "My head didn't hit, it's just my bike that hit your car."

I think Arnaud didn't see me because he only looks at mom. At the same time, I'm not even sure he knows my name, we've never talked and he's new to the school. As I watch him, I see something sticking out of his shorts. Suddenly, he looks at me and I see him lower his head. He quickly pulls down his t-shirt and sweater. Arnaud blushes, obviously very embarrassed.

"Are you sure you're okay?" mom asks him as Arnaud stands up.

"Yes... yes... I'm fine..." he says, looking at me.

"I think it's better if I call the fire department and even your parents. Do you know your mom's or dad's number? And do you have any pain? Where do you live?"

Mom is stressed, and I understand her, she just hit a kid on a bike.

"I... don't know their number," Arnaud says. "And I live not far from here. And no, I'm not hurt. I just have a scratch on my leg."

I then see mom lift Arnaud's torn pants and look at his knee. Indeed, if that's all, it's nothing serious. Mom then looks everywhere on Arnaud: legs, arms, and then lifts his sweater. Arnaud doesn't react immediately, but he starts crying a few seconds later when he realizes that mom and I have seen... the top of his diaper.

"Why are you crying?" mom asks him. "Is it because you're hurt somewhere?"

"I think it's because he's wearing a diaper," I tell mom.

"Oh, that's not a problem. Don't cry about that. I won't tell anyone that you wear one, and Jenny won't either, right?"

It's weird to see someone my age wearing a diaper, especially someone I know.

"No, of course not," I say, "I promise I won't say anything."

I then see Arnaud look next to me, and turning around, I see Noa looking at him.

"Hi Arnaud," Noa says to him.

"Hi," Arnaud replies.

"But do you both know each other?" mom asks.

"We were friends in elementary school, yes," Noa answers.

"And I know him too," I tell mom, "we're in the same class."

"I see. Here's what we're going to do. I'll put your bike on the side, park properly, and we'll go up to the apartment. We'll figure out what to do then. Does that work for you?"

"Yes," Arnaud replies.

So we do what mom just said and we find ourselves shortly after in our apartment. Arnaud seems embarrassed, and I can imagine it's because he's wearing a diaper. Mom gets something to disinfect his scratches, lowers his pants, and takes care of him. Noa and I watch.

"Oh, it looks like your diaper is wet, can I check? " mom asks him.

Arnaud stutters, blushes, and doesn't answer. Mom, understanding she won't get a response, touches his diaper with her hand.

"Wet," mom says, "and close to leaking from what I see. Jenny, please get a clean diaper."

Thankfully, mom didn't ask me to get one of MY diapers. I'm already blushing, but if she had told Arnaud this, I wouldn't have known where to turn. So I leave for a few seconds to go to my room and take a diaper from my bag.

"Do you really not know your parents' phone number?" mom asks him as I come back.

Mom has now completely removed his pants.

"Oh, you're here Jenny," mom says. "Give me the diaper please."

I hand the diaper to mom and she puts it on the floor before sliding Arnaud's diaper off his ankles. She completely removes it and now puts on the clean diaper.

"You're all clean now, you must feel better, right?"

"Yes... Thank you..."

"And about your mom's phone number, you still haven't answered me, you really don't know it?"

"Yes..." Arnaud timidly admits, "but..."

"But what? Tell me."

"We don't have to call her, I'm fine."

"Explain to me, it seems like you're scared of something. Are you going to get scolded because of your bike? You know, it's me who's going to get scolded! Tell me, is it a secret?"

I don't know why mom is asking him this question.

"Yes..."

"Tell me quietly then. You know, you can trust me," mom tells him.

Arnaud then steps forward and says a few words in mom's ear. Noa, like me, can't hear and turns to me. I see mom then look at Arnaud once he steps back. Obviously, she doesn't know how to reply, and it takes her 30 seconds before she says something:

"Alright... I understand that you don't want to call her. If I had known, I wouldn't have put you in a clean diaper."

While saying this, mom helps him put his pants back on and pulls them up to the waist.

"I'm going to accompany you home and explain this bike accident to your parents. And don't worry, I won't betray your secret."

"Thank you," Arnaud replies, looking relieved.

I don't understand what Arnaud might have told mom to make her react like that.

"Before you leave, Arnaud," mom says, "I want to talk to my daughter for a few seconds."

Mom then moves towards my room and signals for me to follow her. Once we're behind closed doors, she closes the door.

"I know I can trust you, Jenny, and I want you to trust me too. What Arnaud told me is surprising, and I'll tell you. Can you promise to keep his secret?"

"Yes mom, I promise I won't tell anyone."

Mom then explains Arnaud's secret to me: he doesn't wear diapers out of necessity but because he likes it.

"What?" I say, very surprised. "He likes it?"

"Shh... not so loud," mom tells me.

"And why are you telling me this anyway?"

"Because I want you to tell him that you also wear them. But only because you have to and only at night. Can you do that?"

"But why would I do that? What's the point? I don't want him to tell everyone about it!"

"I think it would make him feel better, and you know, he won't tell anyone, you can be sure of that."

It's true that wearing diapers for pleasure is much more shameful than wearing them out of necessity. I can't imagine him taking the risk of telling everyone that I wear them at night, I might get embarrassed.

"Okay, he won't tell, but I don't understand how it would change anything for him to know about me."

"Trust me. I feel that this boy needs help. From what he quickly told me, his life is complicated, and it would do him good."

I think for a few seconds before giving my answer:

"Okay," I say.

Mom smiles at me, and we return to Arnaud, who is talking to Noa.

"Noa, start your homework, Jenny and I are going to walk Arnaud home."

Before leaving, Arnaud talks to mom in her ear again, and this time, I understand what he's asking her: he wants to take off his diaper before going home. Mom helps him, and then we leave the apartment.

On our way back, the three of us push the bike and walk, mom explains to Arnaud that I also wear diapers, but out of necessity and only at night. I'm embarrassed, but I can see from Arnaud's face that he's happy.

We meet Arnaud's mom, and she's not angry about the accident. She thanks mom for bringing Arnaud back, and we leave.
