In the days following this event, Arnaud and I talk for a long time, especially on the way back from school, but also outside my house as he walks me home before going to his own place.

I, who do not like to talk to people, especially boys, find myself surprised. We talk about all sorts of things and discover common interests, starting with having a higher intellectual level than others in our class. He also changed classes during the year, but only one level. We have plenty of topics but never the one about diapers, until that Friday afternoon.

"Can I ask you a question?" Arnaud asks as we sit on the steps outside my building.

"Of course," I say, intrigued by his tone but suspecting what he wants to talk about.

"What does it feel like to wear diapers at night and wake up wet in the morning?"

"I was wondering if you would dare to talk to me about this secret we share," I reply with a slight smile. "I'll answer you, but before that, I want you to tell me why you like to wear them and when you started."

"Ohhh..." he responds, blushing.

Arnaud then explains a bit more about his life: his mother who divorced, the new man who lived with his mother and didn't like him much, even spanking him regularly. He also tells me that he was placed in a foster home for a few months and it was very difficult for him. During that time, he started wetting the bed and the other children made fun of him. When he went back to his mother, she had separated from the man who hit him, and the bedwetting stopped all of a sudden. It was during this time that he became interested in diapers. He started stealing them from neighbors and then bought them with his pocket money. He tells me that his mother knows nothing about it, but he is very afraid that she will find out and put him back in a foster home. Arnaud tells me that wearing diapers reassures him, and he feels safe with them, protected from others.

I have a hard time understanding why he feels that way, but I think that with the challenges he has faced, if it helps him, there is nothing wrong with that, and he is not doing anything wrong. I understand better my mother's intuition and the help she asked for him.

It's my turn to talk about my life. I tell him about bedwetting without diapers, then with diapers. I tell him all of this without embarrassment, and without fear that he will tell anyone. I now have complete trust in him. I explain that I hate diapers but I prefer to wear them now than to wake up in a cold bed. He asks me questions and I answer all of them.

"You are lucky to be able to wear them without hiding," he says.

"I would prefer not to need them, you know! I would prefer to be able to go on car trips without fearing wetting the seat, to go sleep at my two friends' houses without the fear of them discovering my secret."

"Yes, you are right, sorry, it must not be fun."

We spend a long time talking together. I would never have imagined having this kind of conversation, especially with someone from my class and even more so with a boy. Life is surprising, it plays tricks on us. Who could imagine that diapers would be a topic of conversation that could bring two people closer?

That evening, after I put on my diaper and lay in my bed, I think about Arnaud's life, what he has endured, and the fact that he is not comfortable having to hide his desire to wear diapers.

The weekend goes by quickly and I am happy to see him at school on Monday. Noa also gets to know him and we have good times together. Arnaud and I only talk about diapers when we are alone. He tells me about his diaper purchases at the supermarket, his fear of meeting someone he knows, or the times when his mother almost found his diapers in his room.

I tell all our conversations to mom, she is my confidante and, after all, she is the one who encouraged me to talk with Arnaud.

"What if you invited him to sleep over on Saturday night?" she suggests.

"But will he wear a diaper to sleep?" I immediately ask my mom.

"He will do what he wants. Ask him if he wants to come first and see if his mom agrees."

All evening, I think about mom's suggestion. Knowing Arnaud, I am sure he will take the opportunity to wear a diaper! He will also see me with mine, but considering all he knows about me now, it doesn't bother me.

The next day, during recess, I ask him about a pajama party at my house and his answer is exactly what I imagined:

"Oh yes, great, I would love to, thank you. I am so happy. I will ask my mom if she agrees."

So, with his mom's approval, it is agreed, the next day, that Arnaud will come to sleep over at my house on Saturday night.
