As we do our homework, Noah, the younger brother, comes over to us, curious to see what we're doing. He asks to play video games, and Carl asks me if I want to. I say yes.
So, all three of us start playing, leaving our homework aside. The atmosphere is relaxed, and we start a game of Mario Kart 8 while chatting about everything and nothing. As I focus on the game, Noah, sitting on the floor next to me, suddenly makes a remark:
— Tim, do you want to try a diaper too?
I blink, surprised, and I don't know how to respond right away. Carl, sitting next to him, intervenes softly.
— Noah, leave him alone.
But Noah insists, innocently, just with the curiosity typical of children.
— What's wrong? He looked earlier, he must be curious, right?
I feel my cheeks slightly heating up, and I turn to Carl, trying to figure out how to respond.
— I'm sorry, he tells me, it's not to make you uncomfortable. It's just that, in our family, it's normal, you see. If you ever want to try, we can give you one. But really, it's up to you.
I remain silent for a moment, weighing the pros and cons. Their offer is not mean-spirited, and I see that they are just trying to share something that is part of their daily life. But deep down, I'm not ready for it. Although, if I'm at Carl's house, it's because diapers intrigue me. In fact, it's mostly because I just don't dare say yes.
— Thanks, but... I'd rather not, I finally say with a shy smile.
Carl nods understandingly.
— No problem, you decide.
Noah seems a bit disappointed, but quickly goes back to the game we're all playing on the console, and the conversation naturally shifts to another topic. As we continue to play, my thoughts wander. Their offer, although kind, makes me reflect. Why am I so intrigued by their way of life? Why does all of this seem so natural to them, while to me, it seems so different?
Carl notices my pensive look and puts down his controller.
— Tim, are you okay?
I startle slightly and turn to him.
— Yes, yes, sorry. I was just thinking, that's all.
— About what Noah said?
I hesitate, then nod.
— A little, yes. It's just that... this is all new to me. But I think it's cool that you're comfortable with it.
Carl smiles.
— It's normal that it seems weird to you. But you know, in our family, it's part of our life. And if someday you want to ask questions, you can.
His tone is so reassuring that I feel a bit more at ease.
— Thank you, Carl. You're a great friend.
He laughs softly.
— You too, Tim.
The afternoon continues in a light atmosphere. We eventually put away the console to play a board game with Emma. Carl, true to himself, takes off his sweatpants saying it's more comfortable. I notice he's still wearing his diaper, and it's a bit puffy. Emma does the same and takes off her skirt. Both of them now have their diapers visible as we sit on the floor, cross-legged, in Carl's room.
Noah, with his usual enthusiasm, can't help but tease.
— You should change, he says to his sister, your diaper's going to leak.
Emma shrugs, amused.
— It can wait. We're playing right now.
I watch them, surprised by their casualness. For them, all of this seems really ordinary, like changing socks or washing hands.
When we later go downstairs because I have to leave and say goodbye, their mom welcomes us with her usual smile. She goes over to Carl and Noah to check their diapers, while chatting with me about the afternoon we spent.
— So, Tim, did you enjoy coming here?
— Yes, a lot. You're a really nice family, I sincerely say.
— Thank you, that makes me happy. Come back anytime.
I go back home with a mix of thoughts. I didn't fully understand their way of life, but I know one thing: this family is close-knit and caring, and I want to come back to their home.
